Uniformitarianism and
Geologic Column Basics.

In 1785, James Hutton proposed a theory of geology called uniformitarianism. The idea is that observed geologic features are the results of processes observed today. It assumes that there were no catastrophic events of sufficient size to disrupt observed geologic process. The key term use is, "The present is the key to the past."  Unformitarianism was intended to replace the Genesis Flood as the main mechanism for form Earth's geologic features. The theory by definition assumes that such a Flood never occurred.

In doing so Hutton unwittingly fulfilled a predicted in II Peter 3:3-6. The phrase, “All things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation” is essentially ancient Greek for uniformitarianism. Further more because of this theory  men are willing ignorant of both creation and the Flood.

About 1830 Charles Lyell and others developed the geologic column. While rocks are found in the in layers, the concept of the geologic column assumes that certain fossils are found only in certain layer. The problem is that it is now assumed to be an absolute pattern, and so permeates the classification of fossils that it makes it difficult to determine if it is based on a real global trend. Information about fossils that can help check the reality of the trend claimed by the geologic column is often lacking; such as absolute depth; since in the geologic column model that information is irrelevant.

There are fossils and sites that do raise questions about the accuracy of the claimed trend.  Fossils do no always line up in layers, in fact in many cases only one layer of fossils is found at a given site, this is most common with vertebrates. Where absolute depth can be considered the pattern predicted by the geologic column does not hold. I know of a Jurassic site in Connecticut; Dinosaur State Park; whose fossil foot prints are at a depth of  50-100 feet, and Cambrian site in New York, whose fossils are only 5 feet deep. Such descrepencies are just explained as resulting from erosion and rock movement. There are also fossils that are found in the wrong place according to the geologic column.

Finally there is really no place in the world were it can be found in tact. There are a few places were column is claimed to be intact but these are based on comparing rocks with those of other locations and not fossils. Few if any fossils have been found in these places so they prove nothing about fossil distribution. Furthermore such sites actually only contain a small fraction of the geologic column. In reality the geologic column is assembled from various location, and is only found intact in charts. It does not seem to really exist.
